Gastonia is the biggest of the Gaston County towns and its housing shows it. The old mill-village streets near the center have small lots, tight drives, and porch steps never sized for a wheelchair. The ranch homes and newer subdivisions toward Robinwood Road are easier on the driveway and harder on the turnaround. A lift needs level ground, and there is a hard limit on how many steps we will ramp a wheelchair over. At a skilled nursing community we also confirm which door staff use for transport, which is usually not the front one.

The drive

Uptown Charlotte is about 22 miles east on I-85, and depending on the hour that is anywhere from 26 to 31 minutes. Gastonia sits inland, so unlike Belmont or Mount Holly this is not a river crossing with a bridge project in the middle of it. It is a straight interstate run, one of the more predictable long routes we drive.

Inside town the numbers are small. Court Drive, Summit Crossing Place, and Cox Road are all a few minutes apart. What eats the morning is not the driving, it is check-in, the procedure, and the discharge. Give us the appointment time when you book and we will work backward from it.

Yes. Discharge rides are routine work for us, in ambulatory and wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Release times move, so call as soon as you have a rough window and we will build the ride around it.

I have treatment at the cancer center on Court Drive several times a month. Do I have to book each one separately?

No. Give us the schedule when you call and we will put the whole run in at once. On longer treatment appointments wait and return is usually the better structure, since the driver stays on site.

Yes. Referrals out of the county are normal, and a round trip east on I-85 is a straightforward ride for us. Booked that way, the return is guaranteed rather than left open.
