Senior Transportation in Charlotte, NC
You cannot always be there. We can. The Doctor Ride is private medical transportation built for exactly this.
Your dad stopped driving last spring. Nobody made a big announcement about it. The keys just quietly went in a drawer, and now every doctor appointment on a growing calendar is a question with your name on it.
You know the pattern. The cardiologist on Tuesday, the eye doctor two weeks out, the physical therapy that runs three times a week for a while. The sibling group chat trying to figure out who can cover Thursday. Somebody burns a PTO day. Somebody tries a rideshare and gets the panicked phone call from a parking lot, because the app sent a driver who would not wait, would not help with the walker, and had no idea where the door was.
You cannot always be there. We can.
The Doctor Ride is private medical transportation built for exactly this. Not a caregiver running an errand between other tasks. Rides are the whole job. Owned, lift-equipped vans. Drivers who are CPR certified, PASS wheelchair certified, and HIPAA trained. A live team on the phone every day. And when the ride is done, we bring them home, and we can text you the moment they are through the door.
How does door-through-door service actually work?
Most rides drop a person at the curb. That is where things go wrong for an older adult who moves slowly, uses a walker, or gets unsteady after an appointment. So we do it differently, and every step is deliberate.
- The driver comes to the door. Not the curb, not the driveway. The door.
- The driver helps them out of the house and into the van, walker and all.
- The driver walks them to the door at the destination, not just the parking lot.
- When the appointment is done, the driver is there for the return leg. On a two-way booking, that return is guaranteed. Nobody is left waiting in a lobby wondering if the ride is coming.
- The driver walks them back to their own door at home and makes sure they are safely inside.
- If you asked us to, we text you that they are home.
That last text is the part families tell us they did not know they needed. You are two cities away, in a meeting, and your phone buzzes: your mother is home and inside. The worry you were carrying all afternoon just gets to set itself down.
Before we confirm any booking, we screen the home. We ask about the driveway, whether there is room to turn a van around, and how many steps are at the door. That is how the ride goes smoothly on the day instead of turning into a problem in the moment.
What kinds of appointments do you drive seniors to?
The recurring medical calendar, mostly. Doctor appointments and specialist visits. Physical therapy and outpatient therapy. Dental. Eye appointments. Follow-ups after a procedure. The standing visits that pile up as someone gets older and the list of doctors gets longer.
If it is a medical destination in our service area, it is a ride we do. What we do not do is pretend to be something we are not. We are not a home-care agency. We do not sit with anyone at home, we do not provide personal care, and we do not do companion care. We move people, safely and with dignity, and on wait and return we stay with them at the appointment. That is the whole offer, and doing one thing means we do it well.
Wheelchair or ambulatory: which ride does my parent need?
Two kinds of ride, and the difference is straightforward.
If they can walk to and from the van with a steadying arm, that is an ambulatory ride.
If they use a wheelchair and need to stay in it, that is a lift-equipped van with a driver PASS certified to secure the chair properly.
Either way the rate is flat by service type, the same whether it is a Tuesday morning or a Saturday. We do not run surge pricing, ever. The price you are quoted is the price.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us how they get around and we will match the ride to them. We quote the mobility type they actually need, not a padded package.
When should the driver stay for the whole appointment?
Sometimes dropping off and coming back later is the wrong call. That is what wait and return is for. The driver parks, stays on site for the entire appointment, and never leaves the premises. When your parent is done, their ride is already there.
This matters most in a few situations:
- Sedation. After anything that involves anesthesia or sedation, the facility will not discharge a patient to a rideshare or a cab. They require a responsible adult who was present. The driver on a wait and return booking is that presence, and the same person brings them home.
- Long appointments. Some visits run two or three hours. Sending an older adult out to flag down a return ride at the end of that, tired and worn down, is how afternoons fall apart. The driver waiting in the lot removes the whole problem.
- When a familiar face matters. The same driver, there the whole time, is steadier for someone who gets anxious or disoriented in medical settings.
Wait and return is billed by the hour in 15-minute increments of actual time, with a two-hour minimum. On a wait and return the driver does not leave, so there is never a gap where your parent is standing alone waiting to be collected.
How does pricing work?
Think about what a failure costs first. A burned PTO day to drive across town and back. The afternoon lost when the patchwork breaks down and a sibling has to leave work. The rideshare that stranded your mother at a clinic. Against that, our pricing is simple: a flat rate by service type plus mileage, quoted in full before you book. No surge, no exceptions, the same price at short notice as two weeks out.
For a standing schedule, look at the Reserved Membership. It is built for families whose parent has recurring appointments. It lowers what every ride costs, waives after-hours and weekend surcharges, and holds a reserved place on the schedule so your times are protected. Every ride still bills per ride; the membership lowers the cost of each one and locks in your spot on the calendar, which is the thing that matters when the same three appointments come around every week.

How is this different from asking a home-care agency to drive them?
A home-care agency sells care by the hour, and a ride to the doctor is one line item inside that. The person driving is a caregiver fitting an errand between other duties, usually in their own car, often on a schedule that bends to the rest of the day.
We are the opposite arrangement. Transportation is not the add-on, it is the entire business.
- The vehicle is an owned, maintained van, lift-equipped when it needs to be, not a personal car.
- The driver is credentialed for the job: CPR certified, PASS wheelchair certified, HIPAA trained.
- There is no broker in the middle and no shared ride. The person who picks your parent up is our driver in our van.
- The whole method is built around the door: out of the house, into the van, to the door at the destination, back home, inside, and a text to you.
If your parent needs someone in the home, a home-care agency is the right call and we will happily say so. If what they need is to get to appointments safely and be brought home, that is the thing we are built to do, and it is all we do.

Frequently asked questions
Can I book rides for my mother if I live in another state?
Yes, and it is one of the most common things we do. You arrange and pay for the rides from wherever you are, we handle everything on the ground here in Charlotte, and we can text you when she is home after each one. You do not have to be in the state to make sure she gets there and back.
Will the driver help my dad if he uses a walker or gets unsteady?
Yes. The driver comes to the door, helps him out of the house and into the van, walks him to the door at his destination, and walks him back inside at home. Door through door, both directions. He is never left to manage a curb or a parking lot on his own.
Do you wait during the appointment or do I book two separate rides?
Both options exist. On a two-way booking the return leg is guaranteed, so the ride comes back for him. On wait and return, the driver stays on site for the whole appointment and never leaves, which is what you want after sedation or for a long visit. Tell us the appointment and we will tell you which fits.
My mom uses a wheelchair. Is your van equipped for that?
Yes. We run lift-equipped vans, and the driver is PASS certified to secure the wheelchair properly for the ride. For exact numbers, get an instant estimate online or call and we quote it on the spot.
How do I pay, and is there a plan for weekly appointments?
You pay per ride, and for recurring schedules there is the Reserved Membership. It lowers the base fare on recurring rides, waives after-hours and weekend surcharges, and reserves your spot on the schedule. Each ride still bills per ride, so the membership lowers what every ride costs rather than replacing it.
Can I talk to a real person when I call?
Yes. Every call is answered immediately, and from 7 AM to 7 PM every day you are talking with a team member on the spot, someone who knows your parent's situation, not a menu and not a queue.
Do you serve my parent's neighborhood?
We cover greater Charlotte and about 40 to 45 minutes out, within North Carolina, including Ballantyne, Matthews, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, and Concord. If you are not sure your parent's address is in range, call 704-992-7433 and we will tell you.
