Harrisburg and Cabarrus County 7 days a week Ambulatory and wheelchair

Harrisburg has almost none of its own medical infrastructure. No hospital, no surgery center, no imaging center, no cancer center. Atrium Health Harrisburg on Rocky River Road is a freestanding emergency department, open around the clock, with no inpatient beds. What the town has is offices: a three-building medical park next to the emergency room, and a Novant Health building at Harrisburg Town Center. Nearly everything past that is a drive.

Living close to your doctor is not the issue here, because most people in Harrisburg are not close to theirs. The issue is that the appointment that takes away your ability to drive is usually the one furthest away. Sedation, a dilated eye exam, a hold on driving after surgery: each lands on a day when the destination is fifteen to twenty-five minutes out and whoever normally drives you is at work.

That is what we do. We are a private-pay medical transportation service based in Charlotte, and Harrisburg is one of the areas we drive every week.

Harrisburg sits between two systems, and the referral picks the direction

Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord is seven to eight miles north of Harrisburg, twelve to fifteen minutes on a normal morning. Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center is a comparable distance the other way, southwest. Harrisburg sits almost exactly in the middle, so the direction you drive has very little to do with the map and everything to do with which system your doctor practices in. Two neighbors can have appointments the same morning and head opposite ways out of town. Give us the facility name rather than the town and we point the van the right way.

What Our Clients Say

Our Google rating is 5.0 across more than 50 reviews.

Three ways to book

One-way

We take you there, or we bring you home. Priced as a single leg. It does not include a return.

Round trip

We take you and we come back for you. The return leg is guaranteed.

Wait & return

The driver stays on site for the whole visit, in the reception area if that is easier.

On wait and return, for minor procedures including colonoscopies, our driver can serve as the designated person the facility requires before it will perform or discharge the procedure. Harrisburg has no center of its own doing that work, so the appointment is already a drive, and wait and return makes it one arrangement instead of two.

Every driver is CPR certified, PASS certified for wheelchair securement, and HIPAA trained. We use our own vehicles and our own drivers, so there is no third party in the middle and nobody to hand your ride off to.

We check the pickup before we confirm

Before any booking is confirmed we ask about the driveway and the entrance at both ends: the surface, whether there is a flat spot to lower the lift, whether a full-size van can turn around, and how many steps there are.

Most of Harrisburg went up in the last twenty-five years, which means short steep driveways, garage entrances that serve as the real front door, and cul-de-sacs a full-size van has to think about. Older properties along Rocky River Road and NC-49 bring the opposite problem: long gravel drives with no level spot near the door. A lift needs level ground, and there is a hard limit on how many steps we will ramp a wheelchair over. We ask while you are booking, not on the morning of a procedure.

The drive

Harrisburg is about fourteen miles from Uptown Charlotte and NC-49 does most of the work, twenty-two to twenty-five minutes when it is clear. The two closer destinations, Concord to the north and Mint Hill to the southwest, are the ones that come up day to day.

None of those are long drives. They are exactly long enough to stop being a favor you can ask twice a week, which is most of the reason people here call us. Give us the appointment time and which direction you are heading, and we work backward from there.

Common questions from Harrisburg riders

Is Atrium Health Harrisburg a hospital?

No. It is a freestanding emergency department on Rocky River Road, open around the clock, with no inpatient beds. Anything needing admission means a transfer to Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord or into Charlotte. We are not an ambulance service, but we drive the appointments and the ride home.

My mail comes to Charlotte 28215 but I live in Harrisburg. Does that cause a problem?

No. The emergency department on Rocky River Road carries a Charlotte 28215 mailing address even though the building sits in Harrisburg, and plenty of homes around it do the same. Give us the street address as it appears on your mail and we handle the rest.

My doctor sends me north to Concord and my husband's sends him southwest to Mint Hill. Can you do both?

Yes, and in Harrisburg that is normal rather than odd. The two are close to the same distance from most addresses here, just in opposite directions. Book them separately and tell us the facility name each time.

There is no imaging center in Harrisburg. Where do you take me for a scan?

Wherever the order sends you, usually Atrium Health Cabarrus Imaging on NE Gateway Court in Concord or Novant Health Imaging at Mint Hill Medical Center on Healthcare Loop. Both are short rides. If the scan involves sedation, book a round trip or wait and return rather than a one-way.

My procedure is at a surgery center in Concord because there is not one here. Does the driver wait, or come back?

Either, and it is worth deciding before the day. On wait and return the driver stays on the property the whole time and can be the designated person the center needs before it will discharge you. A round trip means we leave and come back, with the return leg guaranteed. A one-way carries no return.

Do you answer the phone at night?

Yes. Every call is answered, never voicemail. During our hours you are put through to the team on the spot. Calls that come in later are captured and worked, never dropped.
